The cradle of mankind – where homo sapiens (that’s us!) first originated (somewhere in east Africa, between Kenya and Ethiopia). Check our our Africa travel guide for everything you need to know about travelling to Africa

Africa is most often associated with wild safaris, where you can view elephants, lions, giraffes and zebras up close. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find that this beautiful travel destination has far more to offer.

As the second largest continent, Africa has 54 countries – more than any other continent. Africa is largely surrounded by water: the Mediterranean Sea in the North, The Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east.

Geographically, Africa is home to many natural wonders. The world’s longest river, the Nile, runs from Burundi to Egypt and the second longest, the Congo River, which runs through the Democratic Republic of Congo and is 230 metres (750ft) deep in some parts.

When thinking of Africa, the image most tourists see is the safaris on the sprawling savannah. However, Africa is as diverse and multi-cultural as it is vast.

There are the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, the ramshackle markets of Marrakech in Morocco, the idyllic white sands of Nyali beach and Diani beach in Kenya, diving with sharks in Cape Town or the awesome Victoria Falls on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe.

South Africa

So far in Africa, we’ve only been to the beautiful South Africa. We aim to change that very soon but, as a travel destination in Africa, you can’t go wrong with South Africa. With green forests, white sandy beaches, safaris and game reserves, deserts and metropolitan cities all within a short drive of each other, South Africa has a vast array of reasons for tourists to travel there.

Naturally, as one member of our family was born and raised in South Africa, we have a ton of local travel knowledge and advice. South Africa is a very cheap holiday destination, if you know what you’re doing, and there are a lot of great ways to keep your travel costs down.

Slow travel is the name of the game and you’ll want to spend a fair amount if time travelling around South Africa to get a full taste of the South African culture.
