Taprobane Island is unlike anything you’re likely to see elsewhere. A tiny, private island just off the coast of Mirissa, Sri Lanka. Home to a single villa, this atoll is a tropical fantasy.
Set just 20m off the Sri Lankan coast, Taprobane Island is accessible only by walking across the shallow water. Alternatively, it’s not uncommon to see guests making their way to the island on the back of an elephant!
Sri Lanka’s only privately owned island, Taprobane Island is no stranger to celebrity visitors. The villa itself was built by the island’s most famous owner, the exiled Count de Maunay of France, but has also welcomed the likes of authors Peter ten Hoopen and Paul Bowles. Several songs have been inspired by the island. Most famously, Kylie Minogue’s “Taprobane (Extraordinary Day)”.
If you are fortunate enough to spend some time staying on Taprobane Island, you’ll find yourself dividing your time between getting lost in the vast tropical garden or swimming in the infinity pool that overlooks the crystal blue Indian Ocean before settling down and sampling the food cooked for you by the island’s private chef.
